This depends on the profitability of the crime. When it comes to defending people who beat others up, steal small amounts etc, it is usually a case of court paid (low) fees.

If you get a great reputation or are in with big crime people, you can make a lot for as long as you live.

The legal profession does try to drag out proceedings to keep lawyers employed, but it is hard to keep the number of lawyers trying to make a living well paid.

The salary amount varies with location, what kind of law you’re practicing, etc. The average salary starting out is estimated from $60,000 to $70,000 per year. The more experienced you are does nothing but helps you; the average for a successful lawyer can be anywhere from $200,000 to a million plus. It’s all about where you practice and how much experience is “under your belt.” But cities such as NY and Washington pay top dollar; large firms can even pay first year associates at $160,000/year.
