New York City police have a suspect in custody for the disappearance of 6-year-old Etan Patz 33 years ago and have “cautious optimism” that they may finally have a significant break in the case. Authorities said that it is possible that Pedro Hernandez, 67, could be charged as early as today with the kidnapping and murder of Patz, who disappeared while walking to school for the first time near his parents’ Manhattan apartment in 1979. Hernandez has implicated himself in the Patz’s death, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said this morning. “An individual now in custody has made statements to NYPD detectives implicating himself in the disappearance and death of Etan Patz 33 years ago,” Kelly said in a statement. Hernandez, was taken into custody at his residence in Camden, NJ, had never previously been named as a prime suspect. He was convicted three times in Indiana in the 1990s for battery as well as dealing and possession of cocaine, according to public records. Though police have named other suspects in the past none have ever been arrested or charged.
