I Was Arrested for Drug Possesion in 2004, but Was Not Convicted. I Had to Do Community Service And?

Question by Jerith N: I was arrested for drug possesion in 2004, but was not convicted. I had to do community service and?
it all went away. I was turned down for finacial aid because of “lying” on my application. It asked if I had ever been convicted of a felony so I answered no.

Does an arrest sometimes show up as an conviction?

If you were arrested for a Felony and you never saw to it that it wasn’t reduced or expunged from your record, then yes, you are a Felon.

An arrest will only show up as an arrest and the original charge. Financial aid is prohibited to people ‘convicted’ of a felony.

You need to determine why you were denied financial aid and if it is related to your arrest in 2004. If so, you will need to do some work to clear the record related to your arrest and subsequent plea.

    Hope this helps. Good luck.

If you had to do community service, then there was some adjudication made as to your guilt. Perhaps you pleaded guilty; perhaps you pleaded “no contest;” perhaps you pleaded guilty to a lesser included charge on the ground that you got community service.

However, if you were arrested for drug “possession,” unless the quantity was a lot, that’s probably not a felony.

Are you sure that was the basis for your denial? Because just being convicted of a drug offense makes you inelligible for financial aid:
