Thursday wasn’t the first time officials with Operation Inasmuch came face-to-face with the man who has been charged in the shooting death of one of their care recipients. Executive Director Sue Byrd said she first met 18-year-old Terrane Kulaiah Dukes this summer when he and a group of men came to the Hillsboro Street mission. Dukes was charged Wednesday night with first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon in the death of 67-year-old Wolfgang Joppich. Joppich was found unconscious about 8 pm Sunday on Tally-Ho Drive behind Krispy Kreme off Bragg Boulevard. He had a single gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. Dukes appeared Thursday before District Court Judge Toni King and asked for a public defender to represent him. He is being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center without bail. Dukes’ mother, Daisy Davis, spoke with reporters after her son’s brief court appearance. She said Dukes was innocent, but he told her what happened Sunday night. “I know my son,” she said. “The one thing he’s not going to do is kill no one.” Davis said her son was with another man – who she said was a 44-year-old family friend – when the shooting occurred. She said the unidentified man told her son to “watch this” before shooting Joppich.
