Nicotine is:

* 1000 X more potent than alcohol
* 10-100 X more potent than barbiturates
* 5-10 X more potent than cocaine or morphine

Smoking is legal in all but one country in the World. Since nicotine is more potent than cocaine, should cocaine also be made legal and available for purchase at your local convenience store?

Yes actually you can overdose on Nicotine and die.

40–60 mg (0.5-1.0 mg/kg) nicotine is a lethal dosage for adult humans – it is considerably less for kids.

I don’t think it is so much the nicotine in cigarettes that causes the problem but more so all the other chemicals that are added that are detrimental to ones health. As I understand it, Nicotine is the addicting part of a cigarette. Going by the dose administered in a cigarette, it certainly won’t kill you, but the other contaminants are proven to kill 50% of its users.

e-cigarettes on the other hand do not contain these other contaminants and therefore should not be lethal, however the amount of nicotine stored in an e-cigarette (36mg for one brand) may indeed be lethal if administered in one dose which is actually possible as there is no ‘safety -off’ switch to prevent overdosing. An e-cigarette that holds 36 mg of nicotine is equivalent to 36-40 full strength cigarettes.
