I do know that heroin was once thought of to be the treatment for morphine addiction. This just makes me wonder whether cocaine may have started out in the same way.

Heroin and cocaine did start out in a similar way. Cocaine, however, was used as an anesthetic and due to its mentally stimulating effects, it was also used as treatment for depression. Cocaine comes from the leaves of the erythroxylon coca bush and in the early 1900s, it was deemed as a main stimulant drug that got used in a lot of elixirs and tonics that were utilized for the treatment of different illnesses.
