Written by City News Service – A drug-possession suspect being treated in the Centinela Hospital Medical Center emergency room in Inglewood was shot to death today by a sheriff’s deputy after he tried to grab another deputy’s firearm. Neither deputy was injured in the shooting, which took place at 1:10 am at the hospital at 555 E. Hardy St., according to the Sheriff’s Department. The 27-year-old suspect had been in custody at the sheriff’s South Los Angeles Station after his arrest around 2:35 pm Wednesday on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, sheriff’s Lt. Holly Francisco told reporters outside the hospital. The suspect, whose name was withheld pending notification of relatives, had an unspecified medical need and firefighters who went to the station recommended he visit the emergency room, Francisco said. The man was accompanied by two deputies and had one wrist handcuffed to a gurney in a room assigned for triage of incoming patients when the shooting occurred. “Using his free hand, the suspect grabbed a deputy’s gun,” sheriff’s Deputy Kim Manatt said. “Fearing for his safety and his partner’s safety, a second deputy fired his weapon at the suspect. The suspect was hit and was pronounced dead at the scene.” Sheriff’s homicide detectives were sent to the hospital to investigate.
