Drug Possession: HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVISTS DRAW INTERNATIONAL ATTENTION TO POLITICAL PRISONERS

Christopher Strasser’s ‘Definition of a political prisoner’ report may be removed from the agenda of the October 3 session of the PACE, said Human Rights Club coordinator Rasul Jafarov citing reliable sources in PACE. According to Jafarov, delegations from Azerbaijan and some other countries try to discredit the reporting arguing that some of its provisions are disputable. Jafarov said that they have informed the PACE members about two recently arrested youth activists Nigar Yagublu and Zaur Gurbanli, who are potential political prisoners. Members of ‘Azerbaijan without political prisoners’ alliance also focused on prison #14, where a recent protest of inmates was violently suppressed. According to Musavat Party Youth Ogranization chair and former ‘prisoner of conscience’ Tural Abbasli who had also served in this prison, hundreds of prisoners took part in this protest, 25 of whom were brought to criminal liability. Speaking about possible causes of this protest, Abbasli noted that the prison #14 reminds a concentration camp. Prisoners are denied communication here. They are often beaten and tortured. Officer Alizamin Guliyev is particularly cruel toward the inmates. According to other former prisoner of conscience Ahad Mammadli, a similar incident in Georgia resulted in the opposition’s victory in parliamentary elections. ‘Torture methods in Azerbaijan are far crueler compared to Georgia’ said Mammadli.
