Question by hotwatr: Is there a law that you cannot sell drugs within 1000 ft of a church (aswell as anywhere else)…?
I was reading a news report and A lady was found with drugs. The story said she was being charged with lots of things including selling drugs within 1000 of a church. Is that a law, i have never heard of it. Here is the paragraph from the story

“The eight face various charges including possession and intent to sell cocaine within 1,000 feet of a church, probation violations and marijuana possession.”

Drug Possession: Gang leader busted running drug syndicate from Lithgow prison

A convicted killer and prison gang leader allegedly made about 460 calls a day on a smuggled mobile phone as he coordinated a 0000-a-week drug trafficking syndicate from his maximum security jail cell. Bassam Hamzy, 29,who worships Osama Bin Laden and who is serving a 21-year sentence for murdering a man outside a Sydney nightclub, allegedly made more than 19000 calls from inside Lithgow prison, west of Sydney, between May 1 and June 11 this year. Most of the calls were made in Arabic, to a syndicate of 12 close friends and family members who allegedly shifted .5 million worth of cocaine and ice from NSW to Victoria in six weeks. Five of the principal players were arrested in Sydney and two others in Melbourne, during a series of dawn raids on Thursday that allegedly netted a loaded gun, a large amount of cash and thousands of pills. Of those men, Khaled Hamzy, 56, Ghassan Amoun, 22, Thomas Miholic, 36, and Mohammad Abbas, 28, faced Burwood Local Court on drug possession and proceeds of crime offences, as well as one count each of participating in a criminal group. They were remanded and are due to return to court on February 11. Police said Bassam Hamzy was expected to be charged with at least 15 serious drug and criminal group offences.

  • Sway_27:

as far as I am aware, selling illicit drugs is illegal period.

  • boogity88jr:

You cannot sell drugs anywhere, but the penalties are stricter if you are caught by a school, I did not know about by a church.

  • M A:

my pastor sells drugs to the childrens choir and hes never mentioned that

  • joseph's brain:

It can be a higher offense near schools and perhaps other places young kids congregate. But in general, it’s illegal everywhere.

  • Kevy:

A lot of states have a special section in the charge for offenders who do that within 1000′ from a school/church/govt bulding. It is the same charge of possesion with intent, but the penalty is higher.

If you were to read all the mumbo jumbo in here, they will up the penalty one degree if you are within so many feet of a church, school etc.

  • Chris:

    yes, you read that right…

Most states have that law on books to include selling drugs near churches, schools, or other insitutes that SHOULD be considered a “safe haven”. It is generally the SAME charge as “selling drugs” it jsut carries a little stiffer penalty.

  • Lovely Lady 27:

The law states that you can’t sell drugs at all, but the fine is more if you are with in 1000 feet of a church or school b/c of the fact that you are intending to sell to children. Which is and should be a worse punishment than selling to adults. But any intent to sell drugs in illegal.

  • ya_staff_sux:

here in florida the 1000 ft of a church law exists.

Not sure if it does in every state or not

  • Michael C:

Those laws started poping up 10 or so years ago. They vary by state and city. Generally they will have a harsher penalty for selling drugs within a certain distance of churches and schools.

  • Hawkeye:

Many states have laws that increase the punishment for selling drugs in close proximity to schools, churches, etc. because of the greater likelihood they are selling drugs to kids.

It’s illegal to sell cocaine everywhere in the U.S. These people just face more punishment than if they were not so close to a community center like a church.

  • mandababy87:

law that says you cant sell drugs period…….
bigger charges if its close to a school or church.
    yes its a law

  • violatedyetagain:

There are additional charges when someone is caught within so many feet of a SCHOOL, PARK, OR CHURCH. Anywhere where children are expected to be present. If you speed thru a school zone during summer break with a pound of pot in your trunk, you’re going to get double the prison time.

  • Dr.Zohar:

Law says that because protect the catholic church, they know are nothing good when the pastor touch those thigh little kids asses from the core has to be drug free in that way when penetrate the kids with dirty fingers the experience has to be natural.
