Drug Possession: Two Azerbaijani Writers Arrested in Iran and Charged with Espionage

On July 4, a group of writers and journalists in Azerbaijan held a roundtable to discuss the arrest of two young Azerbaijani writers, Farid Husein and Shahriyar Hajizade, in Iran. Writer Chingiz Abdullayev spoke on how these writers were invited to Iran and subsequently arrested. He described this incident as serious violation of human rights. It was proposed to create a human rights protection committee for the detainees and to appeal to international human rights organizations for support. Other speakers at the event deemed this arrest the indicator of the current Iran-Azerbaijan relations. Local and international human rights organizations were criticized for indifference to this problem. The event also condemned local newspapers for not covering this issue properly. On April 29th Farid Husein and Shahriyar Hajizade attended a poetry festival in Iran. On May 2nd they were detained in Tabriz by persons, whose identities are unknown. Iranian authorities confirmed their arrest several weeks later. According to unofficial sources, they are accused of espionage and drug possession. ======================================================== Geysar Gurbanov is a civil rights activist from Azerbaijan.
