Ecstasy is a hallucinogen and produces stimulant effects like amphetamine. Ecstasy is often marketed as a “feel good drug” because of the positive feelings of well being and empathy toward other people, elimination of anxiety, and extreme relaxation. Club scene users are able to endure parties for many days because it suppresses the need to eat, drink and sleep. It is mostly available in pill or capsule form.
Ecstasy made its debut in the early 1960s and by the 1980s had all time popularity as a psychedelic drug, fuelling many an all night rave in England. The drug was used to treat various psychiatric disorders, initially.
but, instead of curing the patients, it made them worse.
The Addictive Side of Ecstasy
Many users get addicted to the emotional state they reach on the drug, even though it is not physically addictive like cocaine. Signs of Ecstasy Abuse
Short Term: Nausea, hallucinations, chills, sweating, increases in body temperature, tremors, involuntary teeth clenching, muscle cramping, and blurred vision are some of the effects of this drug. Anxiety, paranoia, and depression are some of the effects that these users report. high blood pressure, faintness, panic attacks, and, in more severe cases, loss of consciousness, seizures, and a drastic rise in body temperature are the signs that the user has taken an overdose. heart failure or extreme heatstroke arises as a result of overdoes, leading to death.
The effects start after about 20 minutes and can last for hours. An Ecstasy high has been described as a ‘rush’ of feeling followed by a feeling of calm and a sense of well being to those around, often with a heightened perception of color and sound. Stiffening of arms, legs and particularly the jaw along with sensations of thirst, sleeplessness, depression and paranoia, feelings of false energy and some mild hallucinogenic effects are some of the other ill effects.
Long Term: Research shows that it causes long-lasting damage to brain areas that are critical for thought and memory.
Ultimately, Ecstasy is a Schedule I synthetic, psychoactive drug possessing stimulant and hallucinogenic properties. Therefore short term or long term it is definitely not advisable to use the drug.
