Drug Possession: S’poreans among four foreigners charged with drug trafficking in M’sia – 27Aug2012



KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian court has charged four foreigners with drug trafficking and possession of dangerous weapons. Singaporeans Tan Meng Kiat and Kwok Pin Hwee were charged along with Chinese national Meng Bei Bei and Vietnamese Le Thi Thuy Nga. If found guilty, they can be sentenced to death. It was a drug raid that caught Malaysian authorities off guard earlier in August. On top of over 600 grams of ecstasy pills, and 90 grams of ketamine, the police also found a cache of weapons including a hand grenade, a pistol and samurai sword at a condominium just outside Kuala Lumpur city centre. All four arrested at the raid, including two Singaporean men Tan Meng Kiat and Kwok Pin Hwee, were charged at the Kuala Lumpur magistrate court for drug trafficking under Section 39b of the Dangerous Drugs Act that carries a mandatory death sentence if convicted. Tan and his wife, 25-year-old Chinese national Meng Bei Bei, were also charged for possession of firearms. If found guilty they can be jailed up to 14 years. According to the investigating officer, both men were wanted by the Singapore authorities for drug-related offences but they managed to escape over a month ago. They were believed to have entered Malaysia illegally as there is no immigration record of them entering the country or leaving Singapore.
