Wasn’t Jesus the Original Hippy?

Question by Alex G: Wasn’t Jesus the original hippy?
C’mon – peace and love and forgiveness and radical non-violence (not even in self-defense!)… these are the things Jesus preached. He was against capital punishment, and punishment in general (he saved a prostitute from being executed by saying “only those of you who have never sinned may punish her”)

In addition, he advised that people leave their families, because family isn’t important. He advised giving up all worldly possessions and becoming homeless, like he was, and just wandering around “preaching the good news” (that this world doesn’t matter – what matters is being kind and loving toward your fellow man, so that you will find yourself in heaven when you die instead of hell, where the greedy and hypocritical fake religious types will go (i.e. “Pharisees”, rich bastards, priests, televangelists, gay-bashers, evangelicals, pentecostals, bible-thumping fascists of all kinds, etc.).

Aside from the drugs, music and free love, isn’t this all pretty close to what the hippies stood for? I’m pretty sure Jesus had long hair too – unlike the Christian fascists of today!

If Jesus were here today, would he be working in a Wall Street bank? Would he be some upper-middle class doctor or lawyer? Would he be some freak pastor like Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson or Oral Roberts?

Or would he be down with the kids at Occupy Wall Street? Yeah, I thought so.
