Cocaine and the Heart?
Question by Gsta95: Cocaine and the heart?
I used cocaine for a while, and now I am clean. However, I m worried about the effects I might face in the future. I’ve done some research. Some people have heart attacks around 40 years old from doing cocaine in their mid twenties. I am 24. I used to be an avid runner. If I start jogging again, and I mean really jogging. Would that counter the effects of the damage done by the drug?

I, too, am a recovering addict. I went and had a screen done last year. That is my only suggestion to you. The affects of drug use cannot be reversed, but you can help yourself by eating healthier and exercising. Follow up with a doctor. Be honest about it. That is your best bet. It can also affect people younger than 40. My ex (my daughter’s dad) was 29 and died from heart failure dec 11, 2007. Please do yourself a favor and go to the doctor. Congrats on being clean. You are moving in the right direction!!

This is awesome!
Congrats on being clean!
It’s so cool how you are worried about your heart now.
Yes, cocaine can cause a lot of damage to the heart muscle.
Seeing how this is hard to detect and can be sudden, I think it is best for you have an ECG and echocardiogram every 5 years.
Best of luck!

The body is very resilient. It depends on how much you used and for how long? The longer the addiction, the more the damage. You being only 24 means is a good sign, there have been people who have used cocaine heavily well into their 30’s, 40’s, 50’s before dropping dead from a heart attack or other cocaine related death. I myself used cocaine and many other drugs from age 15-25. I was an Elvis like user, but add in the non prescription goodies as well like coke, weed, and hallucinogens. I developed a tachycardia problem which already started to show up before I quit using. I have had to take a beta blocker ever since. I had one relapse since 1985, in the year 2000, one year solid of heavy cocaine use (powder and crack). After almost one year exactly, I ended up in the ER with severe tachycardia 250 beats per minute, couldn’t breath, they gave me a strong shot to slow down my heart rate and oxygen. They also ran me through all the tests and I did followup with a specalist. Funny thing all those years I didn’t have any problem until I went back on the coke. I haven’t used since and haven’t had a problem. I am almost 50 now and as far as I know my heart is still okay. Staying away from the drugs is the key and taking good care of your health. Get the checkups ECG and echocardiogram, and don’t overdue things or use drugs again! You will probably be fine!
