Question by Dill: How can you explain the presence of autoreceptors with something like cocaine?
Cocaine leads to an increase in certain neurotransmitters in the synaptic cleft. Wouldn’t autoreceptors just detect this increase and then decrease the release of those neurotransmitters effectively mitigating the effects of the drug?

If they did that for cocaine they’d do it for the natural stuff too, which would defeat the purpose of having such neurotransmitters in the first place.
Over time with regular increased stimulation from drug use they probably do decrease their sensitivity to the drug. Wouldn’t be surprised.
