Cocaine burns the nose because it doesn’t belong there! Its abrasive texture irritates the tiny blood vessels, causing them to become inflamed and painful. To get rid of the burning sensation, try using a nasal spray or water. Long term use can lead to a perforated or deviated septum, not to mention other health problems – including death. Do your friend a favor and get him some help!

The damage done to local tissue is not due to cocaine being in crystalline form. The primary cause would be local vasoconstriction. Even though it takes extremely heavy use to deviate the septum, it is highly recommended that users wash out their nasal passages immediately after insufflation to remove residue, spread it around and prevent the cocaine from accumulating on a small area. A small amount of water can be dripped into the nostril and allowed to run out down the back of the throat. Warm water works best.

Unless your friend finds cocaine interfering with their life, i.e. they use it compulsively, there should be no need to subject them to the unpleasant experience of a rehabilitation clinic. Normal users, who form the majority, choose when they want to take the drug and when they do not want to take it. The abusers of drugs, cocaine included, are the exception, not the rule.
