I Got Convicted of a Misdemeanor, Is My Dream of Becoming a CPA Gone?

Question by Stephen Riach: I got convicted of a misdemeanor, is my dream of becoming a CPA gone?
A really stupid thing happened. Basically, a “friend” sold me a camera, and a few days later, the police were at my door. Questions were asked, and it came down to “Did you think the camera was stolen?” And my reply was, “Well, I thought it might be, but I wasn’t certain.” They wrote this down on a piece of paper and had me sign it. Apparently, I was signing my own confession. I was convicted of “possession of stolen property.” I really wanted to become a Certified Public Accountant. Would anybody still give me a job with this conviction? I’m so bummed.

I don’t think you’ll have an issue. I think the licensing board only looks at higher grade offenses… not what you confessed to.

It shouldn’t have as big an effect on your records as you think. From what I understand is that if it is something minor such as possession of stolen property or possession of illegal drugs, etc. it does not directly effect your chances. Basically if; after your application and work experience are filled out, and processed and reviewed, the board will make the final decision as to where you stand as far as misdemeanors and felonies are concerned. Just make sure your experience and degree(s) of schooling are well satisfying and persuasive and I think you’ll be okay.
